Which High-Def Video Format: Blu-ray or HD DVD?

December 31st, 2007 · 2 Comments · Tagged as Video

By now you’ve probably at least heard of the two dominant high-definition video format, Blu-ray and HD DVD. Sony had claimed that their Blu-ray would become dominant, but earlier this Fall, Sony CEO Howard Stringer called the HD format race a tie, primarily due to HD DVD discounts - which Paul Stamatiou reflects upon in an in-depth comparison of the two high-def formats. On the other hand, some companies such as Blockbuster won’t rent out HD DVD. So which format is going to win out, or will they always be about equal?

Now I have not been following this format war, but it’s not the first (remember VHS vs Betamax?) and it probably won’t be the last. I don’t know which is the superior format technically, but I believe it’s Blu-ray. Though that means Blu-ray players are far more expensive. When it comes to consumer electronics on a mass scale, expensive usually loses out. However, according to the charts from Wikipedia that Stamatiou shows, Blu-ray seems to be gaining in sales.

Me, I’m looking forward to purchasing or renting movies online, digitally downloaded and viewed on my flat screen computer monitor. Unfortunately, not everything will be available for downloading. So for me as a film blogger. that means learning about HD DVD and Blu-ray and going with the one offering the most titles - even if that means spending $800 for player if it’s Blu-ray.
