“What are you going to do, spoon me to death?” - from Mystery Men?

I’d love to be clued in to why the movie quote “What are you going to do, spoon me to death?” is such a hot Google search on March 11. But I think I can shed some light on the mysterious movie quote. It’s got to be from the Ben Stiller flick “Mystery Men.”

I did some digging, and while some claim the line “What are you going (gonna) to do, spoon me to death?” is from the movie “The Whole Nine Yards,” I’d wager that the 1999 film “Mystery Men” is more likely.

If you never saw it, “Mystery Men” is the case of a ragtag team of wannabe superheroes — and one of the unlikeliest is The Blue Raja, played by Hank Azaria, who flings spoons and forks at the villains.

So, what movie do you think the quote “What are you going to do, spoon me to death?” is from? I’d love to be enlightened on this one. And all this talk of “Mystery Men” makes me want to rent it again.

The quote, and the subsequent mystery of what movie it originates from was a topic of conversation this morning on Los Angeles radio station 106.7 KROQ’s morning show.

I’m not sure what consensus they reached…hundreds of people called and emailed in with various suggestions.

The spoon quotation is a popular search today because of the Kevin and Bean morning show on KROQ in Los Angeles. They posed the question on air and nobody was able to remember what movie featured the line “what are you going to do? spoon me to death?”

Ralph on Los Angeles’s KROQ morning radio show put out a call for the source of the quote today and the response has been across the board. Mystery Men and the Whole Nine Yards were mentioned as well as Schindler’s List, ET, Seed of Chucky, Boondock Saints, and even an episode of Friends. Searches of online scripts do not turn up anything either.

It was a discussion on LA radio station KROQ this morning… Of course, now everyone that was listening wants to be the hero and find the correct answer.

I’ve looked up the “Mystery Men” script and that quote is nowhere to be found… Baffling, but it’s a fun time waster!

As far as I know, the reason it is a hot search topic is because KROQ a station in Los Angeles, this morning had a discussion where the hosts were trying to find out which movie this quote came from.

The reason why this is such a “hot” search today March 11, 2008 is this: In So Cal there is a morning radio show called the Kevin and Bean show and they have entertainment news every hour done by Ralph Garman. In the 8 o’clock hour today someone sent him an email stating that they have been trying to figure out which movie this quote came from since Thanksgiving! He asked his listeners for help….as far as I know, no one has been able to clear this up…now this is driving us crazy…I’ve never seen Mystery Men so now i’m going to have to rent it tonight and see if you are right! Thanks

I know why it’s a big search today. This morning on a Los Angeles radio show, Kevin and Bean were discussing it. I’m in agreement that it probably was not The Whole Nine Yards. I remember the scene in question, and he was holding a ladle. I’m pretty sure his line was something like “Am I going to Ladle him to death?” I just saw Mystery Men the other day, though, and don’t remember a spoon line like this. I remember a line like “Let’s fork them up” or something. I think the spoon thing goes farther back.

  • Tiff // Mar 11, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Kevin and Bean in LA on 106.7 KROQ were talking about this in the morning - maybe that is why all the searches?

  • Baila // Mar 11, 2008 at 12:20 pm

It’s because a disc jockey on a radio station in LA was wondering what movie the quote is from. Everyone is calling in with answers, but I guess no one has the right answer yet. BTW, I went through the transcripts of “Mystery Men” and “The Whole Nine Yards” but couldn’t find the quote in either of those.

  • Wendy // Mar 11, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Thanks for all the comments — it’s really been driving me crazy to figure out the answer (lots of other folks too, it seems!). I’d love to know the answer if anyone figures it out.

It was on Kroq this morning in L.A., a show called Kevin and Bean. I hear its from BoonDock Saints

  • Fifi // Mar 12, 2008 at 8:39 am

Ralph from Kevin & Bean watched Mystery Men, the Whole Nine Yards, the Whole Ten Yards, the Friends episode w/ Brooke Shields and Cabin Fever…and it’s not in ANY of those!

  • jill // Mar 12, 2008 at 9:10 am

Due to finding this blog in a google search of that quote a ton of people emailed Ralph at KROQ saying it was without a doubt from Mystery Men so the poor guy spent the night watching it (and many of the other suggestions) and you were close (there was a spoon reference), but wrong. Power of the blog. As for the quote and what movie it is from-if any, the world may never know.

  • Tery // Mar 12, 2008 at 10:29 am

The quote comes from the movie Anger Management.

  • Wendy // Mar 12, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Aw, man — it sure seemed to fit with Mystery Men. Glad that someone was able to confirm that it wasn’t that or any of the other theories floating about (whole nine and ten yards, cabin fever, friends).

Tery — that sounds like a likely answer. Can you confirm it? It would be cool to have the mystery settled once and for all.

I started this craziness with my e-mail to Ralph at KROQ. It isn’t Mystery Men, Anger Management, Friends, Old School, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Boondock Saints, Cabin Fever, Anchorman, Fletch, Uncle Buck, Fight Club, 40-Year-Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers, Robin Hood, Zoolander, Mallrats, Aladdin, Joe Dirt, Seed of Chucky, Whole 9 (or 10) Yards, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill. I am still searching!!!!!

  • Wendy // Mar 13, 2008 at 6:02 am

Hey Steph — thanks for stopping by to explain… How did this whole search get started? I’d love to hear what the real answer is.

  • min181 // Mar 13, 2008 at 8:48 am

There is already t-shirts out there with this movie quote on it. They don’t even know where it’s from but with the popularity of the search I think they must be selling some shirts out of the deal.

  • Virginia // Mar 13, 2008 at 10:58 am

Apparently that quote wasn’t in any of the movies listed above. After listening to Kevin & Bean yesterday march 12, they decided that quote isn’t from any movie. They think it might be from a tv show. Where do you think it’s from?

  • Terry // Mar 13, 2008 at 11:49 am

I’m thinking this quote is from a TV show, and not a movie…..

  • Drake // Mar 13, 2008 at 6:48 pm

It is officially NOT from Mystery Men nor from the Whole Nine Yards. They found that out and reported it subsequently on KROQ on the 12th…

Thisquote was was sent in to Kevin and Bean in October 2007 and since then they still haven’t found out where it’s from so they brought it up on air. That’s the back story on it.

I kinda remember the scene that it’s from but can’t think of the actors or any other part of the movie/show but I’m sure it’s a group of three guys or so and they have a map to try to break out of jail and they have a poster on the wall to cover the escape hole and the utensils they are using are plastic spoons/sporks cuz that’s the only thing they could find to dig with and from there on comes the quote or so i believe.

Has anyone thought to try Surfing Ningas? When I thought about it that movie from my childhood came strongly to mind.

My best wishes that someone can find the answer.

  • The General // Sep 9, 2008 at 4:49 am

In The Boondock Siants he says “…what were you gonna do laugh the rest to death? Funny Man!” or I’m missquoting. But as far as my visual memmory recalls the Spoon line is from a movie…

  • The General // Sep 9, 2008 at 4:54 am

The line from Boondock Saints was something like “…what were you gonna do? Laugh the rest of them to death? Funny Man!” or I’m missquoting. The spoon one however my visual memmory recalls it being from a cartoon…
