The Non-Broadcast Success of Firefly/ Serenity

January 10th, 2008 · No Comments · Tagged as Movie-related

Here’s the Firefly/ Serenity saga in a nutshell, from a production point of view:

  • Joss Whedon, creator of Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, comes up with an original space opera series, Firefly, but it dies on the table after the airing on only 11 of the 14 episodes.
  • Fans go nuts online and offer their support by paying ahead of time for a DVD containing the full fourteen episodes.
  • This raises enough capital and studio interest to resurrect the series, without broadcast support, as the 2005 feature film Serenity.
  • Entertainment Weekly puts Firefly/ Serenity in their “Top 25 movies and TV of the past 25 years” list.

Proof that we don’t always need no stinkin’ TV broadcast. Now, would someone please bring back the thought-provoking Early Edition (clip below) with Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom, Grey’s Anatomy)? I’m not sure a feature film would work, but you never know.
