The Dark Knight Smashes Opening Weekend Box Office Record, Bests Spider-Man

Not surprisingly, The Dark Knight smashed the weekend box office record – pulling in $155.34 million during its opening weekend and topping Spider-Man 3’s $151.1 million box office booty in May 2007.
This makes The Dark Knight the biggest weekend opening ever, according to studio estimates. And it’s only going to have more cash registers ringing, with an estimated $200 million expected by the end of the week.
Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros, commented, “We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did.”
Rounding out the top five were “Mamma Mia!” ($27.6 million), “Hancock” ($14 million), “Journey to the Center of the Earth” ($11.9 million) anad “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” ($10 million).
