Could Hollywood be over? A short post at Variety last week mentions noted Hollywood publicist Julian Myers - who is nearing 90 years of age. He seems to think that the current WGA strike, the impending IATSE strike, and unionists crossing other union lines will trigger violence as well as the end of Hollywood.
Umm, that’s pretty pessimistic. Granted Myers knows far more than I about Hollywood, but it is the embodiment of all that most of the populace does NOT have. Entertainment also teaches, and often catalyzes social interaction. I seriously doubt that in our lifetimes we suddenly won’t have film/TV and entertainment in general.
Even if Hollywood does crash and burn, a new “Hollywood” will arises from the ashes - even if it’s in another locale. But it’s unlikely to be in, say, Toronto aka Hollywood North, simply because the entertainment mothership needs to be in a warm climate.
Just speculating on what I think is over-reaction. What do you think?
