You’re making a movie based on a really long book and you have two choices: (1) Make one movie and leave lots of stuff out, pissing off fans. (2) Make two movies and spread things out, pissing off people who were expecting to see a standalone movie.
That’s normally a tough question to answer, but we’re talking Harry Potter. It appears that Warner Bros. are leaning towards the second option. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, currently scheduled for a 2010 release, might be split into two movies because the book is so long. Previous movies left out portions of their corresponding books and upset fans. Given that it’s Harry Potter, fans are less likely to be upset about splitting one movie into - especially since they’ll be based on the last book in the series and probably want to savor it all.
