Here are the current top ten movies based on box office receipts from the past weekend. We’ve added some links to our own posts about each. The number in brackets represents the position last week, if available.

  1. [-] Cloverfield.
  2. [-] 27 Dresses. Katherine Heigl
  3. [1] The Bucket List. Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman.
  4. [3] Juno. Ellen Page, Michael Cera.
  5. [4] National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. Nicolas Cage.
  6. [2] First Sunday. Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan.
  7. [-] Mad Money.
  8. [5] Alvin and the Chipmunks. Jason Lee.
  9. [6] I Am Legend. Will Smith.
  10. [10] Atonement. Keira Knightley, James McAvoy.

It’s no big surprise that Cloverfield tops the list and that 27 Dresses is near the top. Cloverfield has been ultra-hyped and J.J. Abrams is the executive producer of the much-loved Lost TV series. He also executive produced the Alias TV series (Jennifer Garner) and is producing and directing this year’s Star Trek prequel movie (the trailer for which supposedly appeared in Cloverfield screenings).

27 Dresses of course has Katherine Heigl, who’s obviously hot right now, thanks to movies like Knocked Up, and her role in the very popular Grey’s Anatomy TV series.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure which movie is more frightening.
