Michael Douglas to Play Liberace; Steven Soderbergh to Direct

Michael Douglas is taking on a decidedly more flamboyant role – Douglas will play Liberace in an upcoming biography of the performer, directed by Steven Soderbergh. Matt Damon will play Liberace’s lover.

Soderbergh told a French newspaper, “We’ve already done some costume and wardrobe tests on Michael, and they’re very, very, very good. I swear to you, Michael amazed me. He crushed it.”

Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman has decided to bail on Steven Soderbergh’s latest project, “Cleo,” co-starrring Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Hugh Jackman cites scheduling conflicts for dropping out of “Cleo,” which is a retelling of the story of Cleopatra and Marc Antony. Oh – and it’s a musical too.

If this doesn’t earn Benicio Del Toro an Oscar nomination, then there’s something wrong with the universe. Check out the movie trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s “Che,” a big-budget epic (running time 4 hours!) about Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevara.

Audiences in New York and Los Angeles can catch Che on December 12 for a limited engagement; Che opens nation-wide January 9.

Benicio Del Toro won the Best Actor award at Cannes for his role as Che.

Steven Soderbergh to Direct 3D Cleopatra Musical, Catherine Zeta-Jones May Star

Steven Soderbergh’s next directing project is certainly… well, interesting. Soderbergh is planning to take on a 3-D live-action rock ’n’ roll musical about Cleopatra.

Catherine Zeta-Jones may play the role of Cleopatra, while Hugh Jackman is rumored to be cast as Marc Antony.

This will be Steven Soderbergh’s first musical film.

Steven Soderbergh is currently developing a movie based on the life of pianist Liberace. Michael Douglas will play Liberace in the biopic.

Steven Soderbergh is reportedly in talks with Matt Damon to play Scott Thorson, who sued Liberace for $113 million in palimony in 1982. Thorson claimed to be Liberace’s companion for five years.

Liberace died from AIDS complications in 1987; he was 67.
