The striking and talented Helen Mirren has had a long career in movies dating back to 1967’s Herostratus and has done a fair bit of Shakespearean roles including Ophelia in 1976’s Hamlet. More recently, she’s played Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth I, and the Queen in the Academy Award-winning The Queen. She’s also in the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced National Treaure 2: Book of Secrets with Nicolas Cage. And at very youthful 62, she wants to become known as an action hero, and as such, she performed her own stunts in Book of Secrets.
Variety magazine reports that National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets took in US$16.6M in box office receipts opening day (Fri Dec 21st), despite being generally panned by critics. (Of course, that’s not even close to Alvin and the Chipmunks’ opening box office, but there’s still today’s receipts to count.)
Unless I missed it, I didn’t even see Roper and guest cover Book of Secrets, and movie bloggers are saying they didn’t like it. From trailers alone, it’s the type of movie I’d still watch simply because Nicolas Cage is in it, but will probably wait for it to be on TV or in the sale bin for DVDs.
