Hellboy II took the box office by storm over the weekend, pulling in $35.9 million during its debut weekend and earning the number 1 weekend film spot.
The Hellboy sequel, starring Ron Perlman in the title role, and directed by Guillermo del Toro (”Pan’s Labyrinth”) even bested box office superhero Hancock - no small feat.
Journey to the Center of the Earth, starring Brendan Fraser landed in third place with $20.6 million, while WALL-E and Wanted rounded out the top five.
The universally panned Eddie Murphy vehicle “Meet Dave” somehow managed to earn $5.3 million and take the number seven spot.

It’s been confirmed: The Hobbit will be directed by Guillermo del Toro.
New Line Cinema made the announcement yesterday that Guillermo del Toro will be taking over The Lord of the Rings legacy from director Peter Jackson. The Hobbit is J.R.R. Tolkien’s pre-Lord of the Rings masterpiece. Guillermo del Toro will also direct a sequel to The Hobbit, a look at the 60 years prior to The Fellowship of the Ring. Read the rest of this entry »
Ron Perlman is back as everyone’s favorite horned Hellboy in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. It’s been scheduled for a release date of July 11th, 2008. Also appearing are Selma Blair, James Dodd, Luke Goss, John Hurt, Jeffrey Tambor and others.
Guillermo del Toro is directing this one, and very likely number 3, whenever that is. In addition, he’s been directing several Hellboy animated movies for TV and video, and he’s the consulting producer on Hellboy Animated: The Phantom Claw for TV in 2008. He’s also producer on close to a dozen non-English features for 2008 and 2009.
