Notes: It’s the first Bond movie with Daniel Craig, and it’s a remake, portraying how Bond started out as an MI-6 agent conducting his very first assignments. These include going after Le Chiffre, a corrupt banker, whom he has a showdown with at a casino poker table, not to mention fights other bad guys and gets double-crossed. A great Bond movie and a must-see in the series. (Quantum of Solace, the followup, comes out in Nov 2008.)

For convenience, if you’d like to browse our “50 guy movies” by director, here’s a list. Some movies are listed more than once because they have more than one director. (Movies in our “10 guy comedies” and “10 guy-fi movies” lists are not indexed here because they do not have profile pages.)
What’s Guy-Fi? That’s our convenient, collective name for movies that fall into the Vampire/ Horror/ Sci-Fi/ Superhero/ Fantasy/ Comic Book/ Graphic Novel genres and have elements of guy movies. We felt that these genre guy movies deserved their own section, separate from the more mainstream guy movies. About half of these are over two hours, so make lots of popcorn.
10. Beowulf. Because after Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, almost every guy wants to see Angelina Jolie stark naked, even if it’s just through impressive 3D animation. This is based on Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary’s screenplay, which in turn is based on the anonymous Anglo-Saxon poem “Beowulf”, written between the 8th and 11th centuries in England.
These movies deserve their own section. Here are ten comedies that we feel epitomize guy movies.
10. Van Wilder. I wanted to hate this because of Ryan Reynolds, but multiple viewings made me of fan of this idiotic college guy comedy. There are two classic, must-see payback scenes. The first one combines donuts and a dog. The second involves the douchebag Richard (Daniel Cosgrove) being served a “colon blow” smoothie just before his big, important exam. The result is a crass yet screamingly funny scene involving a garbage pail that’ll have you groaning and holding your gut at the same time.
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that amongst our “50 guy movies” list, many of the same directors and actors show up multiple times. Some directors have an understanding of what makes a guy movie, and some actors are just suited to such roles. So we’re not making an intentional shrine to Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie and Frank Miller. It just appears that way. Don’t forget to click on a movie title to see a poster, movie details, and trailer or other video clip.
50. Revolver. Revolver’s story and camera work is well-thought out, yet another misunderstood movie from Guy Ritchie – a master of the “guy movie’ genre. Jason Statham plays an ex-con who becomes a successful gambler, thanks to a formula, but comes to the negative attention of a crime boss.
40. Grosse Pointe Blank. Martin Q. Blank (John Cusack) is a neurotic hitman sent to his old haunting grounds, Grosse Pointe, where there’s a ten-year high school reunion party. Given his current profession, a reunion party isn’t exactly the best place to end up. Best lines: “What am I going to say? I killed the president of Paraguay with a fork. How’ve you been?”
30. Collateral. Tom Cruise as a bad guy? A very rare occurrence. This hitman has some work to do, but he takes a cab to do his business. Jamie Foxx is the unlucky cab driver who tries to save the final target. A very convincing thriller.
20. Hot Fuzz. Ripsnortingly funny British cop movie from the Shaun of the Dead crew. ROTFLMAO. My stomach hurts so bad from laughing. Highly recommended if you like dry British humor (and even if you don’t). Sargeant Angel, an over-achieving London riot cop, gets sent to a station in the countryside, expecting a boring existence in a model, award-winning town that hasn’t had a murder in 20 years – only accidents. Or so they say.
Here it is – our choice for the top 10 modern guy movies.
10. Crank. Want an excuse for having sex in public? This movie has it, and utilizes it several times, not to mention car chases, guns and Jason Statham as a professional assassin – a guy movie mainstay. Brilliant.
